What do I need to lease a van?
To lease a van, you will need to be over 18 years old with a full UK driving licence, have a good credit score, your bank and contact details, and a valid form of identification.
How long can I lease a van for?
You can lease a van for 12, 24, or 36 months, depending on your needs. Choose the term length that works best for you, and we’ll get everything sorted.
How much does van leasing cost?
The cost of leasing a van depends on the length of your contract, how much mileage you need, and the make and model you choose. For an estimated price, get a free online quote today.
What is van leasing and how does it work?
Van leasing is a way of driving a brand-new van without having to buy it outright. Instead, you pay an initial deposit followed by fixed monthly payments over an agreed term (usually 2–5 years). At the end of your van lease, you simply hand the vehicle back or, depending on the agreement, you may have the option to buy it or upgrade to another model. This makes van leasing a popular choice for anyone who wants a reliable van for work or personal use without the big upfront cost of ownership.
Who is van leasing good for?
Van leasing is good for both businesses and individuals.
- Businesses and sole traders benefit from predictable monthly costs, potential tax advantages, and always having a reliable van ready for work.
- Individuals enjoy the chance to drive a new van with the latest features without worrying about depreciation.
If you need a van for work, deliveries, or day-to-day driving but don’t want the hassle of buying, maintaining, and later selling it, van leasing is a great fit.
Do I have to undergo a credit check?
Yes. Like most finance agreements, van leasing does require a credit check. The leasing company needs to make sure you’re in a position to keep up with monthly payments. If you’ve got a strong credit history, you’ll usually have access to the best van leasing deals. If your credit isn’t perfect, you may still be accepted, but the terms could be a little different, such as higher payments or a bigger deposit.
How much is the deposit?
The deposit (also called an initial rental) is paid at the start of your agreement and is usually the equivalent of 1, 3, 6, or even 9 monthly payments upfront. The more you put down as your initial rental, the lower your monthly lease payments will be. For example, paying 6 months upfront spreads the cost differently than paying just 1 month upfront. When comparing van leasing deals, you’ll always see the deposit amount clearly listed so you know exactly what you’re committing to.
Can I lease a van with bad credit?
You can lease a van with bad credit, but it can be more difficult. Some finance providers are willing to work with drivers who don’t have a perfect score, although you may be asked for a higher deposit or offered slightly different monthly terms. The best thing you can do is check your credit report first and be upfront about your situation when applying.
Will my van lease have mileage limits?
Yes, most van leasing deals come with a mileage allowance. This is the number of miles you agree to drive each year, for example, 8,000, 10,000, or 12,000 miles. At First Step, all van leases come with a standard 10,000 mileage limit, which you can increase if you want to. Setting the right mileage is important: go over the agreed limit, and you’ll usually pay an excess mileage charge. If you drive more than average, it’s worth choosing a higher mileage allowance upfront so you’re not caught out later.
What happens at the end of my van lease?
When your van lease comes to an end, you’ll have a few options depending on your agreement:
- Contract hire: you simply hand the van back, and you can take out a new lease on another model.
- Finance lease or hire purchase: you may be able to pay a final amount (called a balloon payment) if you want to keep the van, or you can trade it in and start a new deal.
If you’re returning the van, it will be checked for mileage and condition. As long as it’s within the agreed terms and fair wear and tear, you won’t have any extra costs.
Can I end my van lease early?
Yes, but it usually comes with fees. Ending a van lease early is called early termination, and the cost will depend on how much time is left on your contract. Some providers may ask for a lump sum, while others charge a percentage of the remaining payments.
